The time has come to reveal the cynical cry of “socialism” applied by the Republican leadership to their opponents as the bogeyman that it is.
In most villages, towns and cities in this country, we accept that our taxes pay for sewer systems, road maintenance and what we hope is potable water. Is this socialism?
How about the Veterans Administration hospital system? Are we accepting socialism to care for our veterans, or for that matter, to care for our parents and grandparents through the Medicare system?
The hypocrisy of this smear is well exemplified by upstate Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Schuylerville. On her own website, she has posted speeches and news releases boasting of bringing increased public funding for education through Pell grants, supporting the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and increasing funding for safety-net community health centers in the North Country, among other projects directing government funding to her constituents.
A poll in 2018 revealed that only 17 percent of Americans knew what the actual definition of socialism as those like Karl Marx depicted it: a system in which no one can make a profit from the work of other people, and the community owns the means of production. No Democrats have advocated government ownership of private businesses, or any other version of eliminating private property.
