COVID-19 Vaccine Available at Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center

COVID-19 Vaccine Available at Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center

COATESVILLE, PA — The Coatesville VA Medical Center began offering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to outpatients last week.

Coatesville is one of more than 100 VA medical centers and outpatient clinics now offering the Moderna vaccine. As vaccines become available, the VA care team will be reaching out to eligible Veterans to schedule vaccinations.

The Coatesville VA Medical Center states that if you’re eligible to get a vaccine, your VA health care team will contact you. You don’t need to reserve a vaccine or come to a VA facility to request or receive a vaccine until they contact you. VA staff will only provide vaccines to Veterans who are currently eligible for one based on VA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) risk criteria.

Who is Currently Eligible

Following CDC recommendations, the Coatesville VA Medical Center is first offering the vaccine to Veterans residing in Community Living Centers (CLC), other congregate living settings and health care personnel. Residents of CLCs are eligible for early vaccination due to their high risk of severe COVID-19 illness and death. As vaccine supplies increase in 2021, VA’s ultimate goal is to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to all Veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.

After vaccination, Veterans and health care personnel will need to continue wearing face coverings, practicing physical distancing and washing hands frequently. The Coatesville VA Medical Center asks that you continue to follow federal, state and local safety guidelines.

Background on Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine on December 18, 2020. In clinical trials, the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine was 94 percent effective in preventing confirmed COVID-19 illness. The vaccine is administered in two doses, 28 days apart. The side effects appear similar to those of other vaccines and are short-lived.

Veterans can get up-to-date information and sign up to receive regular updates on VA’s COVID-19 vaccine webpage. More information is also available on Coatesville VA Medical Center’s vaccine website.
